USB-UIRT + Apple Remote: The Perfect Match

Ever see one of your Apple friends bust out that amazingly slick little remote that controls Front Row in OSX? It looks something like this:

I happened to pick up one of these little gems up some time ago in a combo pack with an Apple iPod dock, only to hook it up and find out that the remote does not control iTunes for Windows. Rather, the remote only functions when the dock is used to hook your iPod directly to a stereo. Sad.

However, there is hope.

Look no further than USB-UIRT, a programmable infrared receiver/transmitter for Windows PCs. Jon Rhees, creator of the USB-UIRT, has provided a very user-friendly API for the device. All I wanted to do was control iTunes with my nice little Apple remote, and now I can.

For those of you interested in the five-button functionality of the remote (volume up/down, track forward/back, and play/pause), you can download my (Windows-only) USB UIRT Console app for iTunes by clicking here. (If you don’t have the USB-UIRT installed and connected, the .exe won’t do much for you, sorry). If you’d like the source code, just drop me a line via email (my contact info is available here).
